Syracuse’s two-game winning streak snapped in 3-2 loss to St. Lawrence

Syracuse (3-4) picked up its fourth loss of the season on Saturday, falling 3-2 to St. Lawrence (3-5-1) at Appleton Arena.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Orange.

SU had lit up the scoreboard over the past two games for a total of 11 goals, but were only able to muster two Saturday afternoon.

Syracuse took a 1-0 lead into the second period after Alysha Burriss netted a goal at the 14:16 mark of the first, but the Saints stormed back with three unanswered goals, putting up two goals in the second period and tacking on one more in the third to take control of the game.

Forward Justine Reyes knotted the score at one just over two minutes into the second period while Hannah Miller’s goal just four minutes later gave St. Lawrence the lead.

And four minutes into the third period, Amanda Boulier’s goal made it 3-1 in favor of St. Lawrence.

Facing a two-goal deficit late, SU pulled senior goalkeeper Jenn Gilligan in favor of an extra player, and a goal from Megan Quinn with just 11 seconds remaining only helped the stat sheet. With the goal, sophomore Stephanie Grossi picked up her team-leading ninth assist on the season.

Overall, St. Lawrence outshot Syracuse 25-22, and Gilligan notched 22 saves.

The loss spoiled Syracuse head coach Paul Flanagan’s homecoming to his alma mater. Flanagan coached the Saints from 1999-2008 and finished with a career record of 230-83-24. He also led the Saints to four consecutive Frozen Four appearances from 2003-2007.

SU, which plays its next five games on the road, will look to rebound when it heads to Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7:05 p.m.
