Three former Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey players were named to Professional Women Hockey League (PWHL) training camp rosters for the inaugural season, the league announced today. Allie Munroe, Shiann Darkangelo and Jessica DiGirolamo were all part of the 185 players named before training camps begin on Nov. 15.

The PWHL was introduced in August of this year with six founding teams. Regular season play will begin in January, seven months after the Professional Hockey Foundation (formerly the NWHL) was dissolved in June. Contract issues with Canadian players led to the league’s collapse, according to The Athletic. The Mark Walter group bought the PHF before dissolving it and creating the PWHL. The group also owns all six of the teams. 

Both Darkangelo and DiGirolamo will represent Syracuse at the PWHL Boston training camp. Darkangelo, a forward, was the 70th overall pick in the twelfth round of the PWHL draft last month. She played for two seasons at Syracuse, from 2011-13, before transferring to Quinnipiac. During her time with the Orange, Darkangelo was the leading freshman scorer her freshman year and led the team in goals her sophomore year. She has played professionally since graduating from Quinnipiac, most recently captaining the PHF’s Toronto Six, which won the 2023 league championship.

DiGirolamo, a defenseman, was drafted 34th overall in the sixth round. She joins after most recently competing in the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association for Team Adidas. DiGirolamo played five seasons for Syracuse and graduated as a master’s student in 2022. As a two-time captain, she set the program record in goals from a defenseman in 2021.

Munroe, a Nova Scotia native, will be entering training camp for PWHL Toronto. She was drafted 50th overall in the ninth round. A 2019 Syracuse graduate, Munroe was playing with the Connecticut Whale when the PHF folded. During her four seasons at Syracuse, Munroe was named both an assistant team captain as a junior and a co-captain as a senior. Her senior year she was named the Syracuse Ice Hockey Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year.

The regular season will start in January and each team will play 24 games.
