Syracuse fell three spots to No. 17 in Inside Lacrosse’s weekly rankings after a two-goal win over unranked Hobart and a four-goal loss to No. 12 Army.

The ranking is now Syracuse’s lowest since Feb. 18, 2019, when SU rose from No. 20 to No. 17 following a win over UAlbany.

The Orange sit at 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. They opened the season ranked No. 12 before rising to No. 9 after their season-opener, but since, they’ve dropped eight spots in the rankings.

Against Army, Syracuse allowed three unanswered goals to Bobby Abshire in the fourth quarter. He broke the 13-13 deadlock and lifted the Black Knights to a 17-13 victory. Syracuse’s offense was inconsistent — it didn’t score at all in the fourth quarter, and also dug itself a first-quarter deficit by starting slowly once again. The defeat marked Syracuse’s third straight, and the first time Army has beaten SU in back-to-back seasons since 1972-73.

Against Hobart on Sunday, SU ended the losing streak behind five-goal performances from Brendan Curry and Tucker Dordevic, but it nearly lost due to turnovers and penalties.

Syracuse remains the only ACC team outside the top 15. UNC sits at No. 11, and the conference’s other three teams are inside the top 10.

The Orange will face Johns Hopkins and Stony Brook in back-to-back road games. Neither team is currently ranked in the top 20, though both received votes. Johns Hopkins slipped from No. 15 out of the rankings after an 11-goal loss to Virginia.
