David Bruen, the current Student Association president, along with assembly member Adia Santos, officially announced their joint candidacy for president and vice president respectively in an Instagram post Wednesday afternoon.

The campaign collected the necessary 500 signatures to run for their respective positions, Bruen told The Daily Orange in a statement.

“This campaign will be inclusive of all students,” he said in a message to The D.O. “We are committed to fighting for every student and earning every single vote.”

Bruen said his experience in SA is strong and unique, citing his positions as an assembly member, Board of Elections chair, speaker and president.

While Bruen is looking to keep his current seat, Santos is campaigning to elevate to the vice presidency. The position is currently held by Darnelle Stinfort, a senior.

“I am extremely excited to begin the campaigning process and look forward to meeting new students to gauge campus-wide concerns and goals,” Santos told The D.O. in a statement.

Santos has previously worked as an organizer and activist for groups such as #NotAgainSU, where she helped create a GoFundMe for student protestors to buy food and supplies. The fundraiser would eventually raise over $23,000.

Santos also told The D.O. that she has been involved with the Caribbean Student Association and Hillel during her time at SU.

“Whether it be drafting bills that center DEIA areas of improvement in SA or engaging in campus activism, I want to ensure that by the end of my time here I can confidently say that Syracuse University is a stronger, more aware, more empathetic, and equitable community,” Santos said in the statement to The D.O.

Bruen said he has a lot more to offer the student body. He said his work as SA president is one of the most fulfilling things he’s ever done.

“This year, Student Association has made fantastic progress on our menstrual product program, better policy for survivors, and creating a report to improve the DEIA strategic plan,” Bruen said in the statement to The D.O.

The current president says the campaign wants to continue the SA’s work on dining quality, sustainability and improving the internal structure of the organization.

“I am very grateful for and humbled by the opportunity to become SA’s new Vice President,” Santos said in the statement to The D.O., “and I look forward to accomplishing all of our goals and those of SU’s community, both on campus and beyond.”
