Syracuse’s point guard and leading scorer Kiara Lewis has been named to the All-Atlantic Coast first team. All 15 ACC head coaches and the conference’s Blue Ribbon Panel voted on the annual awards, which the league announced Monday afternoon.
During the regular season, Lewis averaged 17.9 points and five assists per game, both the highest marks on the team. The redshirt junior scored in double figures in all but two of Syracuse’s 29 games, recording at least 20 points in nine contests.
Lewis entered the season as an unproven commodity, expected to replace Tiana Mangakahia. Last season, she came off the bench in each of SU’s games. But at media day, head coach Quentin Hillsman said he wasn’t concerned at all. “We have Kiara Lewis,” he said reassuringly.
The Chicago native has started every game this year and leads the conference in minutes played. SU’s offense revolves around her running high pick-and-rolls, getting downhill and finishing in the paint or finding open teammates.
This is the fifth-consecutive season the Orange have had at least one All-ACC first team selection. Lewis is the fourth player in program history to earn the distinction, joining Tiana Mangakahia, Brittney Sykes and Alexis Peterson.
Lewis was honored in Syracuse’s most recent game on senior night because she’s graduating, though she still has a year of eligibility left. In that game, an 88-81 loss to Boston College, Lewis registered 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds, playing all 40 minutes.
The Orange, who may be without freshman guard Teisha Hyman, will have to lean on Lewis even more in the upcoming ACC tournament. Eight-seeded Syracuse’s postseason begins on March 5 against nine-seeded Virginia in Greensboro, North Carolina.
