The Orange, pictured in last week's matchup with Virginia, couldn't hold on against the nation's No. 2 team.

Once in the 23 times Syracuse and Maryland faced each other prior to Saturday’s game, Syracuse won. The 2012 win in College Park was the last time the Terrapins lost at home. After the 24th matchup between the two teams, it remained that way.

No. 4 Syracuse (6-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast) lost to No. 2 Maryland (6-0) in overtime on Saturday afternoon, 12-11. The teams exchanged goals throughout the game, despite Maryland holding the lead for most of regulation.

It took the Orange just over 17 minutes to score. By the time junior Emily Hawryschuk scored, the Terrapins had already put two in the back of the net. Nicole Levy and Meaghan Tyrrell scored quickly after. Once Hawryschuk ended the scoring drought, SU managed to find the net every two-to-three minutes.

After Maryland scored its fifth goal, bringing the score to 5-3, Syracuse got three straight to end the half. Mary Rahal scored the first in the 3-0 run, followed by Hawryschuk’s second goal and one from freshman Megan Carney. Their goals gave SU a one-point lead going into the half.

Maryland went on its own 3-0 run to start the second, erasing SU’s only lead of the game. The rest of the second half, Syracuse tried to come back.

Two goals by Levy and Hawryschuk would bring the game to 11-all with 11:55 left. Neither team would score for the rest of regulation. Five minutes and 17 seconds of overtime followed. Turnovers and fouls were all either team was capable of for the first four minutes as neither recorded a shot.

In the end, a free position shot was awarded to Maryland’s Hannah Warther two-thirds of the way through the six-minute overtime. She passed to teammate Kali Hartshorn who beat the Orange for the 23rd time in team history.
