SA seeks to clarify student activity fee

Student Association President Aysha Seedat is looking to create a more concrete definition of the student activity fee, which every student is required to pay.

Seedat and SA Comptroller Phil Kramer discussed the fee at a budget meeting Monday with Chancellor Kent Syverud, Gwen Judge and Rebecca Reed Kantrowitz, the dean of student affairs.

SA, along with the Graduate Student Organization, is supposed to have control over the fee. But Seedat said there is confusion about what exactly it funds and what Syracuse University funds separately.

“There really isn’t anything written down,” she said. “And that makes me feel really uneasy.”

Additionally, Seedat and SA Parliamentarian James Franco met recently with Kanique Swinson, the president of the Whitman Student Government to discuss the relationship between that organization and SA.

Last session, there was a proposal to absorb the Whitman Student Government into SA. However, Seedat and Vice President Jane Hong decided that wasn’t something they wanted to do and will instead let Whitman Student Government function on its own. But Seedat and Swinson will still be in communication throughout the year, Seedat said.
