Big East announces divisions for football starting in 2013

The Big East will have two divisions for football starting with the 2013 season, the conference announced on Tuesday.

The “East” and “West” divisions will each have six teams. The season will finish with a newly-created Big East Championship Game. The game will pit the champions of the East and West divisions, and will be played at the home field of one of the participating teams.

Each team will play eight conference games, with five of them being against division rivals.

League commissioner Mike Aresco said in a press release that the move serves multiple purposes.

“This new alignment gives the Conference and its fans the best of both worlds – national exposure that is a result of the BIG EAST being in six of the top 10 U.S. media markets – with a schedule that focuses on spirited regional rivalries.”

The Big East will need to be realigned following the 2014 season when Navy joins the conference.
